IBS is one of the most commonest
disorders affecting the intestines. It is not dangerous or
serious but can cause considerable discomfort.
IBS represents a disturbance in
the function of the bowel (or lower part of the gut) that is
often linked to the feelings and emotions. It is not
associated with any inflammation or structural damages to
the bowel. The word 'syndrome' is a medical term for a
collection of signs and symptons.
Symptoms of IBS
Symptoms can vary greatly from
person to person. Most commonly the symptoms are abdominal
discomfort and disturbance of bowel habit, which may consist
of one or more of the following: Diarrehoa, Constipation,
Urgent need to go to the toilet after food, Sensation that
the bowels are always full or blocked.
Patients may also suffer from a
number of other symptons such as:
- Nausea
- Loss of
Appetite
- Audible
rumbling
- Exessive
Wind
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Backache
- Urinary
Problems
- Bloating or
Swelling of the Stomach
- Indigestion
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
What Causes IBS?
Although there seems to be no
specific cause, Stress, is one of the main factors, although
there are a number of factors that can cause an attack or
aggravate the symptoms. These factors are often life events
associated with loss including:
- The death of
someone close
- Divorce
- Loss of a
job
- Moving
Home
- Changing
Occupation or Retiring
- Anything that
causes stress or anxiety
IBS is thought to affect
approximately 1 in 3 people and to date there is no cure,
although conditions may just fade away however.......
